comments on a whole host of topics specifically related to being a mobile DJ in and around
Little Rock and the Central Arkansas region. Here you'll find tips on songs that we are
recommending for DJs to add to their play lists. These are usually updated weekly. You will
also find other various tips and wisdom related to being a mobile DJ, running a business,

Any DJ who knows the history of our profession, in Little Rock/
Central Arkansas, may recognize the subject of this photo. As a
child who loved music, comedy, and the idea of melding the two as
a DJ, I looked up to Craig O'Neill.
During much of the 1980s, he had the #1 morning show on the #1
radio station in Little Rock, FM 104 KKYK. He was also highly in
demand as a mobile DJ, and could just about name his price, even
with smaller schools. Did he bring thousands of songs? No. Back
then, songs took up space! It's likely that he brought the Top 40 and
some classics. Did he rely on big light shows? No. What he had
that was uniquely his was personality! With a black tux, white
sneakers, mic, and turntables, he WAS the entertainment.
Records were just tools that had to be constantly found, switched,
and cued. The real magic happened in between those songs.
History can teach us much about the future.

The photo below is from Fall 2001, when I worked for US97 under the alias of Jon Ross or J.R.
It's from a remote we did at the Kenny Chesney, Sara Evans, & Phil Vassar concert in Little
Rock. It was a great show! If you were there, you might remember that Sara Evans had a cold,
but still did great, as did Kenny & Phil.
It is true that the fans make the show. That
energy that the fans gave to Sara Evans gave
her the ability to perform a knock-out show
even though she was sick. It's the same
energy that the fans get from her when they
hear their favorite song! It's also the same
energy a listener may receive from hearing a
favorite radio station or DJ. AND it's the same
energy that allows that DJ to turn on the mic,
and speak to thousands of people, yet sound
as if he's talking to his best friend. When a DJ
gives this energy to the crowd at a live mobile event, the crowd gives it back. Then the DJ has
even more to give next time, and he gets more back in return! And on and on and on.
During the week leading up to this concert, I spoke several times on the phone with the venue
about parking the US97 van close to the entrance of the arena for our remote broadcast. We
found out that we couldn't because US97's biggest rival, KSSN 96 was presenting the concert
and had exclusive rights. The US97 van has flashing lights on top like you would see on a
wrecker. We turned them on when we got off of I-30. People started getting out of our way as if
we were some kind of country music ambulance! As we approached the guys from KSSN, and
their perfect remote spot, the lights caught their eyes, and they turned around to look as if to
say, "Hey, who's THIS!?! Oh, THOSE guys."
We told our story to the guy at the entrance to the parking lot across the street, and he let us set
up on the lot. I was accompanied by Courtney from our sales department. We did some call-ins
to the station, and hugged some fans, as shown in the photo above. When it was time for the
concert to start, the KSSN van pulled up to park in the lot because they needed to hurry and get
inside to "present" the concert. The parking attendant wouldn't let them. He gave us exclusive
rights to the parking lot! Did they find a place to park in time to "present" the concert? I don't
know. Was one station more righteous than the other? No. Would US97 do the same to KSSN?
They probably do. This is just my funny little experience in a big rivalry that's existed for a long,
long time between the two biggest country stations in Arkansas.

This past spring, I had the privilege of being part of a great program called Skills USA. It's a
competition where students from high schools and a few technical schools compete in their
own specified areas of interest against others, and learn great deal in the process. I want to
thank KASU Station Manager and the man who taught me radio production at Arkansas State
University, Mike Doyle for contacting me to help him with this event. Our part of Skills USA was to
rate radio ads written and produced by students. There were other areas such as TV production,
culinary arts, law enforcement, woodworking, auto mechanics, brick laying, nail tech, web
design, and computer animation just to name a few!
